Butterfly Mobile and More - My Wensday Toy Bin

"What's in a Butterfly Mobile?"

Hello,

And welcome to another edition of 'My Wensday Toy Bin'. Today I want to talk to you about crib mobiles.

The other day I saw this beautiful crib mobile on flickr.

When I asked, I was surprised to find out that it had been lovingly handmade by an expectant mom. A few days later, I came across some more d-i-y crib mobiles.

Now I am a great fan of putting the personal touches to any room rather than just going out and buying stuff; but I have to confess I am not so gifted as to be able to create such awesome crib mobiles – even if I had the instructions. So I said to myself, let's check out the market and see what the manufacturers have to offer.

I was sorely disappointed. I mean, LOOK at these gorgeous mobiles handy mommies have created and then look at the readymade ones. Is there a comparison? Sure you can get them in just about any theme you want (Teddy Bear mobile, butterfly mobile, hello kitty mobile, even NFL mobile) or any color too (pink star, blue star, red star and more). But where is the variety? Where is the originality?

The only one that seemed to sort of stand out was this Cotton Tales Paradise crib mobile.

And you have to agree, it is nothing to truly boast about.

Cocalo Couture also has some interesting pieces worth writing about; but they fail to leave a lastimg impression as well.

The idea is to make something that intrigues a baby while he is stretched out on his back...and provides audio-visual stimulation. Hence the requisite musical mobile.

Why not a wind chime mobile? To me the soft notes of a wind chime sound most soothing and irresistibly beckoning. Yet no one has created that.

These mobiles do not come cheap either. For the cost, I would have expected more out of them. If you are indeed ready to shell out this sort of money, try one of the etsy shops instead. This Paige Crystal and Pearl Dreamcatcher (from PinkPerch) is sure to make your precious baby and all his visitors smile.
